United States Representative Nick LaLota (R-NY-1), a lifelong Long Islander, was sworn into Congress in January 2023. Public service runs deep in Nick's family; his father was a Nassau County Police Officer, his grandfathers served in the NYPD, his stepfather served in the U.S. Navy, and his brother served 20 years in the Marine Corps. Inspired by this legacy, Nick graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and served as a Surface Warfare Officer, deploying overseas three times and earning a Joint Service Commendation Medal for his contributions to the Global War on Terrorism. After 11 years in the Navy, Nick came home to Long Island and continued to serve in prominent leadership roles in state and local government. He served on the Village of Amityville Board of Trustees, where he focused on reducing taxes and enhancing services, earning multiple credit ratings in the process. As Suffolk County Board of Elections Commissioner from 2015 to 2021, Nick worked in a bipartisan manner to make voting easier and fraud harder in Suffolk elections. In 2022, as Chief of Staff to the Suffolk County Legislature, he managed a $3.7 billion budget, addressing environmental protection and municipal services. Now in Congress, Nick advocates for Long Islanders by championing bills that prioritize local interests, protect the border, support the military, and reduce the cost of living. He has successfully passed legislation to support Long Island businesses, highlighted the importance of maintaining the Asharoken Seawall, and led efforts to eliminate the SALT marriage penalty and lift the cap on the SALT deduction. Nick consistently backs law enforcement, the military, and enhanced border security, contributing to conservative border security legislation and measures that empower law enforcement agencies. He has proudly received the endorsement of the entire Suffolk County Law Enforcement Coalition. Nick has introduced legislation to protect the Long Island Sound and preserve Plum Island, securing over $150 million in federal funding for critical Suffolk County infrastructure. This includes water quality projects across Suffolk, $1 million for flood mitigation and energy efficiency improvements in the Huntington Sewer District, and $40 million to preserve and protect the Long Island Sound. He blocked cuts to northeast rail and Long Island Rail Road funding, opposed a tax bill that neglected the SALT deduction, and voted to ensure his party's Speaker nominee supported Long Island priorities such as funding the World Trade Center Health Program, the National Flood Insurance Program, and raising the SALT deduction cap. Nick met his wife, Kaylie, when they were both students at St. Anthony’s High School. Together, they are raising their three daughters on Long Island. Kaylie teaches at Northport High School and coaches the Tigerettes Dance Team. |
